The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) is an open work visa designed for international students who have completed at least 2 academic years (92 weeks) of study in Australia.

It provides unrestricted work and study rights anywhere in Australia, enabling graduates to acquire critical local work experience, build professional networks, and qualify for skilled migration or employer sponsorship.

2. 2024–2026 Subclass 485 Duration Rules

Under the Australian Government’s updated Migration Strategy, Post-Study Work stream durations have been calibrated to align with skilled workforce demands:

Qualification Completed New Standard Duration With Category 2 Regional (+1 Yr) With Category 3 Regional (+2 Yrs)
Bachelor’s Degree 2 Years 3 Years 4 Years
Master’s by Coursework 2 Years 3 Years 4 Years

warning The 35-Year Age Cap Rule

3. Regional Study Incentives: Gaining Extra Stay-Back Years

Australia actively incentivizes international students to study, live, and work outside the major metropolitan cities of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane:

  • Category 2 — Cities and Major Regional Centres (+1 Extra Year): Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong, Geelong, and Hobart. Graduates who study and reside in these locations receive an extra 1-year Subclass 485 extension.
  • Category 3 — Regional Centres & Other Regional Areas (+2 Extra Years): All other regional locations in Australia. Graduates who study and reside here qualify for an extra 2-year Subclass 485 extension.

4. Subclass 485 Eligibility Criteria & Application Checklist

To lodge a valid application via ImmiAccount, you must satisfy:

  1. Australian Study Requirement (ASR): Complete a CRICOS-registered course conducted in English with a minimum duration of 2 academic years (at least 92 weeks).
  2. 6-Month Application Window: Apply within 6 months of your official completion date (the date your university issues your final transcript or completion letter, not graduation ceremony day).
  3. English Proficiency: Achieve an overall score of at least IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 5.5 in each component) or PTE Academic 57 (with minimum 43 in each band), taken within 1 year before application.
